Girls on Track- Heart and Sole
Registration Open

The Girls on Track program is now called Heart and Sole. We will start our program at BRMS on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 and it will run each Tuesday and Thursday after school until 4PM. The 5K is on June 4, 2016 so our last day will be a celebration on June 7th, 2016.

All 5-6th girls can participate. Please go to: www.girlsontherunvermont.org to sign up or see me if you need a paper application. Some of the girls have taken applications and pamphlets home today. The program cost is $80.00.

Participant Registration for Girls: Once on the Girls on the Run Vermont website, look for the fuchsia bar to the far right titled 'Program Registration'.  When clicked it will bring parents/guardians to the appropriate registration page where they will select the correct link for their region. If you need a partial scholarship, please email me for directions to register. We do have some limited scholarship funding.

There will be a 15 girl limit. Girls will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis until we reach our limit  at which time we will start a waiting list. If you have any questions, please email me at tina.gallagher@cesuvt.org.

The Girls on the Run organization believes that adolescents bring many unique things to the table. We also know that girls at this age often sort through conflicting messages about their worth, their abilities and their value. The new middle school program, Heart & Sole, helps girls develop the skills to tune into their own truths and to unleash their power to live confidently and joyfully.
Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections, and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond. Physical activity is woven through the program as a learning mechanism and a way for girls to experience goal setting and achievement.
The  Heart & Sole curriculum is rich with themes girls can relate to, addressing the whole girl—body, brain, heart, spirit, and social connection—and building important life skills such as team building, developing a support system, boundary setting, asking for and providing help, and more.   The girls will culminate the season by participating in the 5k event!
Please contact Tina Gallagher at BRMS if you can help on Tuesdays after school at 899-3711 or tina.gallagher@cesuvt.org. We would welcome any parent or a community member who might be interested. The program will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school April 5-June 4. Please let us know if you can help one or both days. We would truly appreciate your help!!

VERMONT TECH
ROSIE'S GIRLS STEM & TRADES LEADERSHIP RESIDENTIAL CAMP
And follow-on Mentoring Program – for girls entering 9th & 10th grades (fall 2016)

2016 Summer Camp Dates:
June 20-24 or July 11-15
Randolph Center Campus

Modeled after Rosie’s Girls Day Camps created by Vermont Works for Women in Winooski, Vermont Tech’s Rosie’s Girls camps create positive, safe, supportive, girl-centered environments, with teamwork, healthy body image and tons of fun woven in! A place where girls can enhance their leadership skills as well as get their hands dirty, express themselves creatively, explore what the world has to offer them, what they have to offer the world and take positive risks!

It’s a great place for girls entering 9th or 10th grades (in the fall 2016) to try something new.  Scholarships available! Program offerings include: Computer Information & Software Technology; Civil/Environmental & Architectural Engineering Technology; Construction Management; Science, Agri-Business, Welding; Fire Science; Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering Technology - plus loads of activities and more!!

This experience helps emerging young women expand their sense of the range of educational, work and career options available to them and offers a follow-on mentoring program with women in professional STEM & trade fields. A holistic multi-faceted experience to:
  • Try out a variety of trades and technical fields
  • Increase self-confidence and self-worth and push past preconceived limitations
  • Hear from Vermont women working in the STEM and non-traditional fields
  • Consider careers in STEM-based, nontraditional fields
  • Develop new areas of physical and emotional confidence
  • Expand math and science skills through concrete applications
  • Develop leadership and teamwork skills
  • Have fun; make new friends- and much, much more!

As validation of the effectiveness Vermont Tech’s first Rosie’s Girls camp last summer, 87 percent of participants suggested that the experience made them more likely to pursue a STEM or trade career. “I work hard in math and science but I still have anxiety about my ability to do them. This camp helped me build confidence as well as helped me gain experience using STEM in projects and activities,” noted a camper in her evaluation.

Talent Development Institute 2016

The Talent Development Institute, a program of the Green Mountain Center for Gifted Education, is celebrating its 18th year of programming at Johnson State College. TDI is a summer camp/academic program for advanced and gifted students, from Vermont and beyond, who are entering grades 4-9.  For the first time, the Institute will be held for two weeks: June 19-25 and June 26-July 2 and participants may be involved for one or both weeks. This year's classes, which vary from Wizardry to the Challenge of Space to WTDI Radio to Improvisation and more, engage students and nurture their creativity and their love of learning. The Institute may be experienced as a commuter or as an overnight camper.  The staff is a combination of experienced Vermont educators (some with Master's in educating the gifted), experts in their fields, and Institute alumni.  Campers have a blast learning alongside other smart kids on a small college campus nestled in the beautiful Green Mountains. Returning campers and staff tell us that TDI week is one of the best weeks of their year!

Partial scholarships are available to families who need assistance.  The 2016 TDI Brochure, with more complete information and the complete list of classes, may now be found on our website at www.tdivermont.org

Dear BRMS Families,

I am writing to let you know that we will have another simulation of a new driveway traffic pattern on the afternoon of February 15th during student pick-up.  We have made a few modifications to the traffic pattern we demonstrated earlier in the year.  We are considering modifications to our driveway in order to make the space safer for students and to make necessary repairs.  Please remember that we are doing this simulation to make sure that we have an acceptable plan before it is finalized.  There will be several staff members helping to direct traffic.

There are some important things for BRMS families to know about this demonstration:

  • Buses will drop students off in the same location.
  • There will be a separate lane that is only for buses.
  • There will be no parking along the driveway.
  • All traffic will be driving one way; entering the driveway near the library and exiting near Browns River Middle School.
  • BRMS Students Parent Pick Up Students will be dismissed 5 minutes early 2:40
  • BRMS students who are picked up on this side of the building by the gym. Refer to map and follow the red line.  Please do not pick up your child in front of the building.
  • Once you have picked up your child, you simply follow the loop going one way towards the exit on the Browns River Middle School side of the driveway.
  • Please use the parking lot or front field for parking if you need to go into building to pick up your child.

I am including a map of this driveway plan below.  I have marked the route for BRMS families in RED.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this demonstration.

Thank you,

Kevin Hamilton, Principal
